Algamarine is a Blue Carbon intitiative that started with a dream; to promote sustainable lifestyles by making simple changes in our daily lives. Our region, the beautiful Bundjalung country in the Northern Rivers, NSW, is known for its pristine beauty from Mountain to Sea. Our communty is known for the deep and authentic connections with each other and the environment. We come together for celebrations and challenges, in which the local food produce always plays a big part. The natural beauty, values and lifestyle of our area have inspired us to start this initiative, Algamarine. In collaboration with our partners, we work for a common goal:
Healthy People, Healthy Planet.
The Founders: Isabela and Risto have lived in the Tweed Shire for over 20 years. Isabela was born on the northeastern coast of Brazil, and some of her most treasured memories from early years are the mangrove forests and the scent of seaweed in the sea. Isabela has background in Marine Science and Psychology. She is a passionate marine educator who has been involved in a few initiatives in the Tweed Shire, engaging youth in marine conservation programs, sustainability classes, coastcare, and has taught applications of seaweed. Risto is an IT engineer who moved to Murwillumbah from Canberra for a change of lifestyle. Isabela and Risto love the Tweed Shire. They are the business owners of the environmental consultancy and drone services business Eco Spectrum Solutions.
We are passionate about sustainable food. We believe that food is more than just sustenance - it is a way to connect with others, to explore different cultures and flavours, and to experience joy and pleasure, whilst caring for the planet and local people.

Seaweed is likely to become a staple on the 'menu of tomorrow' as it is gaining recognition as a sustainable and nutrient-rich group of foods. It plays a crucial role in what experts call the ‘protein transition.’ This transition involves reducing reliance on animal-based proteins and increasing consumption of alternative plant-based proteins. The growing demand for seaweed stems from both personal health reasons and its positive impact on the planet. [1].
The edible seaweed products that we sell are some of the main seaweed species consumed currently. These seaweeds are considered superfoods as they contain a variety of vitamins including provitamin A, vitamins B1, B2, B6, B12, C, and E, as well as folic acid, niacin, and pantothenic acid. In addition, seaweeds are a souce of iodine and Omega-3, highly important for brain and hormone functions. The range and level of nutrients will differ depending on the seaweed species The nutritional values will also vary according to region, season harvested, among others. [2, 3].
Marine seaweed (macroalgae) are some of the most productive and valuable ecosystems on the planet. They provide habitat and are the base of a few marine food webs. They also offer a range of ecosystem services - they provide food and oxygen, sequester carbon, absorb nutrients and reduce wave impacts. [4].
Coastal blue carbon refers to carbon stored by coastal and marine ecosystems in their vegetation and soils. In terms of total area, these ecosystems—mangroves, seagrass meadows, salt marshes and marine macroalgal forests such as kelp forests —have a small global footprint, but their deep, water-logged soils can sequester considerable amounts of carbon. They play a crucial role in the carbon cycling in the oceans [5].
